My New Blog

For years I have avoided flea markets telling myself that I would absolutely hate them and that they were most likely filled with "left over" yard sale junk that I would never want.  Reluctantly, almost kicking and screaming, I was recently dragged into a major Flea Market on Hwy. 192 in Kissimmee by a good friend who insisted that I would be pleasantly surprised by this adventure . . . . . . and I was!   In fact, I enjoyed it so much I can't wait to go back!

I was overwhelmed with the array of merchandise at bargain prices, offering watches and jewelry, household items, clothing, children's toys, brand name luggage, electronics, handbags and wallets, perfumes, plants and so much more.  In fact, by paying cash, you can sometimes get even better prices as most vendors are somewhat negotiable.  This is truly a place to consider when shopping on a budget as there is so much to choose from with numerous aisles of merchandise.  There are also plenty of places to sit and relax and even get refreshments to make a whole day of it.

Then there is the traditional yard sale, where you go when you want stuff to find you!  Most weekends there is someone somewhere near you, seeking simplicity or cleaning out their home, who will decide, for a mere pittance, to pass some of his or her most treasured possessions on to total strangers, one of whom may be you.  Sometimes it seems as though you are paying for the privilege of carting off their trash.

But attending a yard sale brings out the whimsical, the impractical and the desirous in many of us.  It is like going on a treasure hunt and the excitement is not knowing exactly what you will find.

For as long as people have owned things, they've also found cause to get rid of them.  You can give them away, leave them in a consignment shop, advertise in a newspaper, or drop them in the street for garbage day.  But if you have a front lawn or carport, chances are you will choose to have a yard or garage sale and chances are even greater that you have probably been to quite a few of them.

A yard sale itself is simple and straightforward - drag unwanted items from your house or garage, arrange them wherever, slap on some price stickers, and wait for other people - friends, neighbors and mostly strangers - to come over and buy them.  It can be lots of fun, quite profitable, and gives a sense of accomplishment when suddenly the unwanted clutter is gone.

This summer, don't forget about flea markets and lawn or garage sales.  It can be great fun and simple entertainment, as you seek treasured items at bargain prices.  You just never know what you might find or what might find you!
