Yes, this is truly "Hurricane Season" where that is all you hear on the news.  Beginning June 1st and ending in November, every year we are bombarded with projections, predictions, names of storms, survival guides, check lists, shelter information, evacuation routes and so on . . . . .

Having lived in Central Florida now for 10 years, and "surviving" three major hurricances in 2004, I have a total respect of these storms, but have learned not to give in to the fear that the news media creates.  Friends, family and local homeowners from abroad will call with every passing storm to make sure we are all okay and everything is in tact, since the media portrays the entire state of Florida being wiped off the map! 

We do get lots of rain, strong winds, some minor flooding and sometimes a horrible storm but rarely does Central Florida get any damage from a hurricane.  Four years ago was very much the exception but it gave residents the opportunity to make their homes stronger and more storm proof than ever before.  For the most part, Central Florida is the perfect place to enjoy tropical "paradise."  We are only one hour to the Atlantic Ocean, a little more than an hour to the Gulf of Mexico, and we are mostly protected from the damaging winds and flooding that most hurricanes bring.  For this reason, homeowner insurance is more affordable here as well as the price of homes. 

Don't let the fear of hurricanes prevent you from buying a Central Florida home.  There is scarcely a place exempt from natural disasters, such as earthquakes, tornados, flash floods, blizzards . . . . it the price we pay here for year round sunshine - and it is well worth it!
